Piquets de grève Demix Agrégats Juillet 2020

Laval, July 5, 2020 – Workers are on strike at the Demix Aggregates plant located in St-Jacques-le-Mineur, QC. The labour dispute began this morning at 5:30 a.m.

The 15 or so workers at the plant voted 100% in favour of strike action on June 22 after voting unanimously to reject the employer’s latest offers, which they considered insulting. These members of Teamsters Local Union 1791 are demanding parity with workers at the same company who work in other plants.

“Some company executives have been complaining that they have had difficulty recruiting new workers for some time,” notes Michel Richard, secretary-treasurer of Local Union 1791. “Better working conditions would have avoided the labour dispute and made the company more attractive to new workers.”

The previous collective agreement expired on January 1, 2020. One day of bargaining is scheduled for July 15.

Demix acquired the St-Jacques-le-Mineur site in March 2017. Demix claims to be a leader in the production and distribution of granular products and serves the Greater Montreal area.

Teamsters represent close to 125,000 workers across Canada. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
