Local Union 419 has been hard at work. Thanks to their help, about 70 workers at three companies managed to join the Teamsters in just under two weeks.

“They wanted fair wages, and to be treated based on seniority instead of favouritism,” explained Brian Lawrence, the President of Teamsters Canada Local Union 419.

The new members hail from the Greater Toronto Area. They’re employed by Chartwell Alexander Muir Retirement, Fresh Taste Produce, and Richelieu Hardware. In Québec, workers at Richelieu Hardware are already represented by Teamsters Canada Local Union 106.

The new members will now elect representatives who, assisted by professional negotiators, will work to secure the best possible work contract.

Just Two Weeks

“It took just two weeks for these workers to join the Teamsters,” said John Hull, an organizer with Teamsters Canada. “That’s pretty fast.”

In an era of stagnant wages, it should come as no surprise that people are rushing to join the Teamsters. Workers with a union earn more than non-union workers. They also enjoy safer working conditions, better health benefits, and greater job security.

Teamsters Canada is committed to building up better wages and job conditions for the working class. Workers interested in joining Teamsters Canada can call 1 866 888-6466 or fill out this form for more information.

Teamsters Canada represents 120 000 members in Canada in all industries. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
