Montreal, March 20, 2022 – Furious, the 320 or so workers present at the meeting voted 99% against the latest employer offers and 99% in favour of giving a strike mandate to their union, Teamsters Local Union 1999.
The issues in dispute include wages and the fact that the employer is imposing a final offer that has not been negotiated. In short, these are one-way talks.
The members clearly demonstrated their anger at this union meeting,” said Eric Picotte, local union president at Molson. I haven’t often in my career seen men and women so determined to get respect from their employer. »
“Enough is enough.”
A possible strike will be called at a time deemed appropriate. The Teamsters are willing to return to the bargaining table, provided the employer shows openness and a willingness to address and resolve the issues in a lasting way.
“The rampant labor shortage in several sectors, including the brewing industry, should be a clear signal to the employer,” explains Michel Héroux, President of Teamsters Local Union 1999. Molson does not seem to understand that workers are becoming scarce and that they are the ones who have an advantage at the moment.”
In total, 424 workers are employed at the brewer’s new plant on Montreal’s South Shore.
The Teamsters Union represents the interests of 125,000 members in Canada. They are affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which has 1.4 million members in North America.
