Sisters and Brothers,

I sent out a message a few days ago regarding the passing of Jim Russell. His suffering is finally over. I am pleased to tell you that the service had standing room only and featured “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by CCR as performed by his brother and brother-in-law and as well, Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz.” It was moving to hear the whole room singing along.

Jim was a committed Teamster, father and friend. He was the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back, and from personal experience, his last smoke too.

Unlike the rest of us, Jim had no pension, and from what I understand, little or no insurance. Jim’s wife Mary left her job with Bell Aliant to take care of him 24/7, and because of her early departure Mary’s pension was cut in half. She didn’t mind and was only too pleased to spend the next 9 years of her life tending to Jim’s every need. I recall one story where Mary was helping Jim get into his wheelchair. He lost his balance and fell on Mary and the two had to wait on the floor for the entire day until the neighbours came to help.

I know that 5 years ago I asked all of you if you would help with a donation as Mary was raising money for Jim’s MS liberation operation. I remember the sheer relief and joy when I told her about the money and about the generosity of you, the Teamsters. That operation made an incredible difference for them, and although the results were temporary this couple was given an opportunity to live as man and wife again. Jim was given a gift, he was able express the love he had building up in his heart when for some time he thought he would never speak again.

Local Union 927 helped the Russells where we could. They never asked for money but when we gave there was always some vehicle or wheelchair repair or an outstanding bill that we happened to be just in time to pay. I certainly have not had an in depth conversation with Mary about her means but I am not blind. I know that every penny, borrowed or owned, went towards Jim’s illness, bills and mortgage.

I am asking this last time for you to make a difference in the lives of Jim’s family and to show Mary how much we cared about him. Help me make her proud of him one more time, let’s make Jim’s legacy be about what he loved the most, his family. I am asking for donations in memory of Jim from Teamsters Canada, and every Local, Division and Member who would like to give. Any amount is welcomed; we won’t turn away the loonies and quarters in the bottom of your pocket.

Cheques can be made payable to Local Union 927 or to Mary Russell, and sent to Local Union 927 at our new address. Regardless of how it is received, Mary will know of your generosity.

Health and happiness to you and yours, fraternally,

Rob Beairsto
Local Union 927
