Laval, August 14, 2026 — After years of fighting by the union and its allies, the Driver Inc. issue is finally entering the provincial election campaign. That’s excellent news for trucking industry workers. Teamsters Canada welcomes the Parti Québécois’ announcement on the file and its plan to bring forward proposals to crack down on the scheme.

The union is now calling on Québec’s other political parties to take a stand on the issue.

Driver Inc. is a misclassification scheme in which trucking companies force their drivers to incorporate to avoid payroll deductions and dodge their obligations as employers. It drains more than a billion dollars in tax revenue, destroys good jobs and punishes companies that play by the rules.

“Giving more powers to our institutions and to road safety officers is a step in the right direction. But make no mistake: it’s the rogue companies behind this scheme that must pay the price, not the workers, who are its first victims. We will study these proposals carefully, and we stand ready to work with anyone serious about tackling this problem,” said Jean Chartrand, road transportation advisor at Teamsters Canada.

“We’ve been fighting Driver Inc. for years. Seeing this issue enter the election campaign is a victory for everyone who cares about good jobs and safe roads. We’re calling on every political party to make clear, firm commitments on this file,” said François Laporte, president of Teamsters Canada.

Teamsters Canada will review the Parti Québécois’ proposals, as well as those of the other parties, as soon as they are unveiled, and will keep pressing a simple approach: penalties must target the companies orchestrating the fraud, and governments must give inspectors and road safety officers the resources and legal powers to enforce the law.
