As Rail Safety Week rolls around, the Teamsters would like to remind the public never to approach tracks except at designated grade crossings. Moreover, it’s important to remain alert near tracks: trains can pass at any time, are quieter than ever, and can take kilometres to come to a full stop. Using train tracks as a shortcut, recreational path, or photoshoot location could result in serious injuries or death.
Intercity Bus Drivers Need Better Protection
The Teamsters Union is concerned about the safety of intercity bus drivers. This follows the assault of a member of Teamsters Local Union 106 who was punched in the face by a rider who did not want to wear the mask.
Federal Safety Guidelines for Drivers
Transport Canada has published safety guidelines to protect drivers and limit the spread of COVID-19. These include making sure vehicle interiors are clean and hygienic and the availability of cleaning materials and hand sanitizer for drivers.
Fatigue: An issue with adverse effects on many workers’ lives
In several sectors of the transportation industry, fatigue lowers productivity, creates risks to public safety, and undermines workers’ health. The next federal government will need to set reliable, evidence-based rules that are not dictated by business.
