Given the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts, Teamsters are reminding employers of the importance of truck drivers in coping with the current crisis.

Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy and are essential to delivering food and medical supplies across the country. A job made even more important by the current crisis.

Without truckers, society would not be able to function, and even today they continue to courageously carry out their tasks. Therefore, we demand that employers and their customers respond to truckers’ needs quickly and efficiently.

That’s why we’re sounding the alarm. Some employers are not being proactive with regards to health and safety measures for truck drivers. The poor cleanliness of trucks, for example, too often presents an unacceptable risk in these times of crisis.

Teamsters are demanding that transportation companies, and their customers, take a strong stance when it comes to the cleanliness of trucks, rest areas and common areas. Toilets should also be available wherever truck drivers go.

Rest areas dedicated to truck drivers are, in the best of cases, in questionable state. We also note that the partial or complete closure of some rest areas, both in Canada and the United States, has significant impacts on the health and safety and quality of life of truck drivers.  This issue must be addressed and resolved immediately by our governments.

Truck drivers are showing courage by working during these tough times and keeping our society running. They must become an immediate priority for employers, job providers, clients and governments.
