Calgary, August 11, 2015 — The Teamsters have filed a complaint with the Alberta Labour Relations Board in reaction to the company’s decision to lock out their workers.
On Monday the 96 workers of Burnco hit the picket lines outside the company’s office in Calgary after receiving a lockout notice last week. The company produces aggregates, paving asphalt and ready mix concrete. They are represented by Teamsters Local Union 362 in Calgary.
The big issues are seniority, respect and non monetary clauses
Bernie Haggarty, union representative of Teamsters Local Union 362, said that the union is willing to go back at the negotiations table “as long as the company is willing to bargain in good faith.”
“The company made an offer last week, but we did not even get the chance to submit it to our members,” explained Bernie Haggerty, union representative at Teamsters Local Union 362. “They locked out our members before we could even vote on their offer!”
Teamsters have been negotiating the collective agreement’s renewal with the company since June. In an attempt to make the negotiations go as quickly and smoothly as possible, the Union even asked for help from a mediator from the ALRB.
“The longest lock-out we had in the past was with Burnco,” recalled the union representative. “Our members deserve to be treated with respect and to get better working conditions.”
