The workers employed by Handlex who are in charge of luggage transfers for various airlines such as Air France, Air Transat and Cubanair voted in favour of a new work contract by a margin of more than 80%. These workers are represented by Teamsters Local Unions 419 (Toronto) and 1999 (Montréal).
Wages were the main issue opposing the employer and union. In fact, the Teamsters have obtained a 9% increase over three years.
“We have managed to make appreciable gains with respect to the non-monetary clauses, namely with respect to tool and work boot allowances. Furthermore, the workers have gained the advantage of a pension fund. We believe that we have negotiated a good collective agreement,” points out Guy Bissonnette, union representative with Teamsters Local Union 1999.
This work contract will expire in 2009 and covers 330 employees who are assigned to Pierre Elliott Trudeau (Montréal) and Lester B. Pearson (Toronto) airports.
