Sisters, Brothers, Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news of the passing Brother Dave Norkett. His life was tragically cut short in a workplace accident at Tecna Forge in Niagara Falls this week.

Dave was a devoted member of Teamsters Local Union 879, a former shop steward, a talented mechanic, and a proud Teamster who embodied the spirit of our union.

Dave was our highest seniority member. A pillar of the workplace, he was the go-to person for advice, guidance, and support. His willingness to extend a helping hand, his unwavering kindness, and his integrity are traits we will forever remember. Dave was not just a colleague; he was our friend, guide, and union brother.

His love extended beyond the walls of the forge. Dave was a husband and a dedicated father to his two teenage daughters, who were the light of his life. Our hearts ache for them and his wife of over 22 years. We share in their grief and offer our deepest condolences.

We stand in solidarity with all those who are affected by his loss. Our thoughts also go out to the colleague who tragically witnessed the incident, who remains deeply affected by the trauma. We assure him, and all our union members, that we are with you during this incredibly challenging time.

We encourage anyone who feels the need to speak with someone to reach out to the grievance counselor.

We will be following the Ministry of Labour’s investigation closely. All workplace accidents are avoidable. Everyone deserves to return home safely at the end of the day, and we are committed to doing everything within our power to ensure this.

In the meantime, let us honour Dave’s memory by recommitting ourselves to workplace safety. Please look out for one another, call out potentially dangerous situations, and refuse to perform unsafe work. Your union will support you.

Rest in power, Brother Dave. You will be dearly missed, but your memory and your spirit will live on in the heart of our union.

In solidarity,

François Laporte
