I am deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of Brother Rick Ashdown. Rick was principal officer of Local Union 979, in Manitoba, and recording secretary for Teamsters Canada.

His career in the labour movement was marked by a deep commitment to our members. He began his career as a truck driver for Motorways, where he acted as a shop steward. He was hired to serve as a full-time business agent for the local union in 1990. By 1994, he had risen to the role of secretary-treasurer and principal officer.

He will be remembered for his dedication to improving the lives of Manitoban workers. Rick also played a pivotal role in revitalizing his local union’s finances, transforming it from a heavily indebted entity to a thriving organization with the resources to effectively serve members.

On behalf of all the Teamsters in Canada, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his friends and loved ones. You will be missed, Rick.

In solidarity,

François Laporte
President of Teamsters Canada
Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters
