Laval, September 30, 2013 – Servisair’s some 700 employees, who work at Toronto-Pearson and Montréal-Trudeau airports, have chosen the Teamsters Union.
The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) had ordered the union allegiance vote after Servisair acquired Handlex. Three unions represented the workers’ interests and Teamsters won the vote.
According to Harjinder Badial, the labour representative assigned to the file at Toronto-Pearson Airport, the workers chose the Teamsters because of the union’s reputation.
“They (the workers) know that we can deliver,” explained Badial. “We have the resources and expertise to face any situation, and they find that reassuring.”
Already Teamsters members, the workers at Montréal-Trudeau have decided to continue placing their trust in the union.
The results of the vote were released on September 16. Not counting the workers already unionized with Teamsters Canada, 300 new workers have joined the most powerful union in North America.
Servisair Holding Canada Inc. and Transat A.T. Inc. announced in may 2012 the signature of an agreement whereby Servisair would purchase Handlex, a subsidiary of Transat providing airport services in Canada. Handlex provides services to Air Transat and to some 20 other air carriers.
The Teamsters represents 115,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
