The President of the Foundation, François Laporte, highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to supporting cancer innovations for all Canadians

Laval, QC, June 12, 2024 – The Teamsters Canada Foundation renewed its support to the fight against cancer by announcing a $250,000 donation to the Jewish General Hospital’s (JGH) Segal Cancer Centre. “Payable over five years, this donation signifies our long-term commitment to supporting healthcare innovations,” stated François Laporte, President of Teamsters Canada and President of the Teamsters Canada Foundation. “This donation allows the Teamsters to contribute to medical advancements that can potentially touch the lives of every Canadian,” he added.

The JGH’s Segal Cancer Centre, based in Montréal, is a state-of-the-art facility that offers patients a comprehensive approach to care, including cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, psychosocial support, nutritional support, and access to both clinical and fundamental research. Created in part through a transformational endowment from Alvin Segal and the Segal Family, the Centre pioneers high-tech, world-class solutions and revolutionary at-home care. Its interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, support staff, and volunteers guide and support patients and their families at each stage of their cancer journey.

Additionally, the Centre boasts a thriving cancer research program focusing on fundamental, translational, clinical, nursing, psychosocial, and palliative care research. Through extensive research programs and collaborations at the Canadian and international levels, the Segal Cancer Centre continuously enhances cancer knowledge and treatment options for patients worldwide.

“We understand the profound impact cancer has on Canadian families, including our union members,” said Guillaume Richard, Director of the Teamsters Canada Foundation. “We’re proud that this five-year commitment will allow us to support the JGH’s Segal Cancer Centre’s groundbreaking work in cancer treatment and their numerous patient support programs.”

The funds will finance research, including developing new therapies, exploring innovative treatment pathways, and supporting patients and their families throughout the treatment process. This support contributes to amplifying the Centre’s impact on patient care and oncology research.

Teamsters Canada and its affiliates remain united in their common goal: supporting communities! Launched in 2018 by Teamsters Canada President François Laporte, the Teamsters Canada Foundation was established to better structure the Teamsters’ charitable activities and provide a new avenue for raising funds and supporting charitable organizations.
