On Monday, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference was informed of CN’s decision to relocate its rail operations from Jasper to Hinton, Alberta, approximately 100 km away. The move is scheduled for September 2025.

“This is another devastating blow to the town of Jasper, after this year’s catastrophic wildfires. Rail is one of the largest industries in Jasper, after tourism, and CN’s move will cripple this community even further. And for the workers who’ve already lost so much—some even their homes—this is a truly cruel blow,” said Paul Boucher, President, Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.

“At a time when Jasper residents are still trying to pull their lives back together, CN is once again putting profits over people, oblivious to the needs of its employees and the community,” added Boucher.

This decision will directly impact around 200 union workers currently living in Jasper.

Under the terms of the collective agreement, the union and CN must now negotiate a package for the affected workers. The Teamsters will work to ensure the best possible compensation for those impacted.

At over 130,000 members, Teamsters Canada is the country’s largest transportation and supply chain union. It’s also the largest union in the federally regulated private sector. They are affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents over 1.2 million workers in North America.
