September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year, nearly 800,000 people globally take their own lives. In Canada alone, close to 4,500 individuals die by suicide each year.
This day serves as a stark reminder that each of us has a role in curbing this tragic crisis. It underscores the importance of always being there, always being ready to lend a listening ear to our colleagues, friends, and family. No matter the challenges one faces, suicide is never the answer, and compassion stands as our most potent tool against it.
Yet, compassion on its own isn’t enough. Far too many suffer in silence, and the insufficient mental health resources undoubtedly contribute to this collective issue. As the president of Teamsters Canada, I urge all companies to prioritize the mental well-being of their employees. A mentally healthy workplace doesn’t just benefit business – it has the power to save lives. Investing in resources, fostering open dialogue, and ensuring support can create transformative change, and for as long as it takes, we’ll fight for it.
